The only political tricks the Republicans appear to know is how to slime their opponents and how to steal elections. Neither is particularly effective on the mother of a soldier they got killed in Iraq, but they are trying opposition research and slime anyway. Go read this post by Norman Lear. The Bush people, naturally, use the Drudge Report to put out their smear.
Kos at Daily Kos has an interesting discussion of the situation. One line I find particularly interesting - "A solid anti-war sentiment has emerged in the country despite the lack of a peace movement or any opposition from any national media outlet or personality."
Maybe the American public is not totally non-political and apathetic after all. It just takes a lot of abuse from the political crowd to get their attention. Maybe 1800 plus dead and 17,000 U.S. casualities has gotten their attention.

I think you're absolutely right. The lower Dubya's numbers get in the opinion polls, the more nasty his people and their supporters among the rank-and-file are going to get. That '04 campaign ad was just a taste of what's to come - the Wolves are coming out alright.
