Mark Kleiman discusses the indictments today against Lawrence Anthony Franklin, Steven J. Rosen and Keith Weissman. Rosen and Weissman are officials at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington, D.C., and Larry Franklin is accused of passing classified information to them when they were not authorized to receive that information.
Mark's key point is that the release of classified information to someone not authorized to receive it, including reporters, is a violation of 18 U.S.C. 793 (d), otherwise known as the Espionage Act. Use of the Espionage Act here indicates that it may also be used in the case of the release of Valerie Plame's name and CIA affiliation to members of the Press.
Karl Rove, "Scooter" Libby and Bob Novak may both have real reasons to be worried at this time. Maybe that is why Novak was drinking before he went on to the CNN show today.
