Time for an "Aha!" experience. What does "tribal identity" mean? According to Digby it is the group of people that you hang out with, feel comfortable with and are willing to go to bat for. Fifty years ago Democrats, Progressives and Liberals had groups like that. Today they generally don't. Why?
Digby says it is because we have bought into the conservative "loose alliance of special interest groups" bullshit. I'll agree somewhat, but it also has to do with air conditioning, TV, and the suburbs. We intellectualized politics during the Civil Rights Movement, just as our society was cutting back on places and reasons to meet each other, and since most of us don't buy into the fundamentalist religions who have taken over all the names and symbols of Christianity, we have simply hibernated in our air conditioned homes without porches in front of our TV sets. At last that seems to me to be some of the reasons.
But don't just take it from me. Go read Digby and see if you agree. I found his article to be a real "Aha" moment.
