Bob Novak has an interesting column in the Sunday Chicago Sun-Times. He reports that Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Kenneth Mehlman warned Capital Hill Republicans that they could lose 25 House seats if they don't break the impasse and pass some immigration legislation and the budget bill pretty soon. Novak also reported the rumor that was floating that Mehlman actually said 45 seats, but that was not confirmed.
Loss of a net of 15 Republican seats in the House will give control to the Democrats.
Novak also reported that Sen. Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, recently avoided meetings with both the President and with House Speaker Hastert. Novak interprets this as a statement from Grassley that the Senator is running his own show and does not want interference from either the President or the Speaker of the House. I find this interesting, but I am not yet sure what it means.
The rest of the political gossip in the column is interesting, also. I don't like Novak, but he can't be ignored.
