I have wondered for three decades who Deep Throat was. At last I know. He is a man America owes a great deal to. His information allowed the Washington Post to continue digging into the extremely illegal cover-up of the third rate burglary at the Watergate Apartments by individuals directed by President Nixon, and afterwards, protected by Nixon and his henchmen.
What in my naivete I didn't expect was the non-stop tour of crooks and criminals complaining about the ethics of the man who caught them and brought them to justice.
An editorial by Martin Schram in Newsday catches the tone very nicely. These are key paragraphs:
"Richard Nixons' ex-convicts - who did jail time for their crimes against democracy and then profited from their crimes by writing books and becoming celebrities - had returned to work one more con. Nixons' former senior White House assistant, Charles Colson, and the Nixon team's burglar-in-chief, G. Gordon Liddy, worked the cable news circuit, expressing moral indignation that the FBI's former deputy director, W. Mark Felt, was Deep Throat.
"He was the source who had blown their cover by feeding facts to the Washington Post's Bob Woodward - truths that helped land many in jail and drove Nixon from office."
We have also gotten lectures from Nixons' speechwriter, Pat Buchanan, from David Gergan, and others from that crooked White House.
Our media does not like saying someone is wrong, but when they interview a gang of crooks, they really should expect the crooks to complain about how unethical the cops who caught them were. That is what we are listening to, and it sickens me. Nixon; Colson; Liddy; Nixons' criminal Vice President who was caught and resigned, Spiro Agnew; These were all unethical criminals and people who were dangers to America and the Constitution. Few others in the White house at that time were much better.
Once again, America owes a massive debt of gratitude to Mark Felt who did what was necessary to bring a gang of criminals to justice. We need to ignore the whining of the criminals who, like all of their unscrupulous kind, really hate being caught and exposed.
I'll refrain from comparisons to the current administration.
