WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown, the principal target of harsh criticism of the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina, was relieved of his onsite command Friday.Obviously Brown has really screwed the pooch. This is the closest Bush has come to actually firing someone for incompetence in five years.
He will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen, who was overseeing New Orleans relief, recovery and rescue efforts, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced.
However, Brown has not been asked to resign. There is a teaser included that says he had planned to move on in the Fall anyway. This will allow him to leave for reasons other than for his incompetence. But he is gone.
The guy really, really screwed up to be the first person Bush has actually replaced on the job publicly. I wonder if he will ever be able to get a Republican patronage job again.
