I flipped on the TV this morning to see who was talking on the Talking heads shows, and Olympia Snowe appeared on Face the Nation.
I'd say that she felt she was in real political trouble, but that isn't reasonable. She was reelected for her third term in November 2006, so she is not up for reelection until 2012. Whatever the reason, she was literally incoherent. She had no central point to make. Instead she tried to make a series of excuses for being a Republican. I think that was what she was trying to say - or maybe avoid saying. Who could tell? She spoke with a classic Dan Quayle Der-in-the-headlights look and she spoke so fast that she sounded like a Auctioneer who had gone off the rails.
Maybe she just failed to prepare for the show. Perhaps she failed to realize just how short having half of a half-hour show would be. Whatever it was, her performance was a complete disaster.
If her problem was politically-based (and why else would she be on the show except for political reasons?), she could reasonably be placed into the "unhinged" category along with Bill Krystol.
