Juan Cole offers a really good explanation of the problem of the tyranny of the majority, and why the Preseident's nominations for the position of lifetime federal judges do NOT deserve an up-or-down vote by the majority.
If the majority in the US gets unfettered, uncontrolled power, then the relatively peaceful nation we have had will end. That is what our constitution and traditions have been about for two centuries.
