Bush White House protecting Rep. Jerry Lewis

Scott Paltrow at the Wall Street Journal reports that the investigation of Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) has been slowed by failure to fund the instigation. [H/T to Laura Rozen.]

This is another defense, following the bribe given to the U.S. Attorney Debra Yang who had been investigating Rep. Lewis. See Question: Does Rep. Jerry Lewis know something that will further damage the Republican Party and/or the White House, or is this just the Republicans acting to defend one more Republican Congressman and his Congressional seat?

Good News for America! Rep. Jerry Lewis will NOT run for reelection in 2008!

America and California have been given some good news by the American traitor [*] Bob Novak! California Rep. Jerry Lewis will not run for reelection for a 16th term.
Lewis is one of at least six Republican House members from California who have faced ethical scrutiny, beginning when Duke Cunningham was sent to prison. Most recently, Rep. Ken Calvert, who was sponsored by Lewis for a coveted Appropriations Committee seat, is under attack. He replaced Rep. John Doolittle, another Californian who resigned from the committee because the Justice Department was investigating him.
Rep. Jerry Lewis was under investigation in the Abramoff scandal when the U.S. Attorney for Los Angeles who was investigating Rep. Lewis decided that the private sector paid better than working for the government. Ms. Yang received a really good offer from the Law Firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in their Los Angeles office.

Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is the law firm defending Rep. Jerry Lewis, the very Congressman Debra Yang was investigating for corruption. The job offer came with an upfront signing bonus of $1.5 million for Ms. Yang, who otherwise was on the Department of Justice firing list. Ms. Yang took the job in late November of 2004, somehow missing being fired during the Pearl Harbor Day U.S. Attorney mass firing which happened three weeks later.

[*] Bob Novak is the treasonous reporter who published CIA officer Valerie Plame's name and CIA affiliation in order to punish her husband Joe Wilson for daring to make George W. Bush admit that he was lying in the 2003 State of the Union Address when he stated that Iraq was attempting to purchase yellow cake Uranium ore from Niger. [Bush's statement that he "should not have included that incident in the speech.] is political-speak for "I was lying and you caught me. Shame on you."

More on the very fishy Debra Yang bribe job offer

EmptyWheel discusses the situation in which the U.S. Attorney for Los Angeles, Debra Yang, who was investigating Rep. Jerry Lewis (CA - R) for corruption resigned as U.S. Attorney and went to work for the law firm who defends Rep. Jerry Lewis.

Don't miss the comments. People knowledgeable in what it takes to get hired as a Senior Partner with a $1.5 million signing bonus normally have to do to get it discuss the situation and its really rotten appearance.

Details on Rep. Renzi corruption.

Emptywheel at The Next Hurrah concisely explains the corrupt land swap for which Arizona Rep. Rick Renzi is being investigated by the FBI.

It is becoming more clear that U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton was most likely removed by Gonzales' DoJ because of this corruption investigation. Charlton's objection to the Death Penalty and his efforts to get approval to tape record confessions by criminals (currently prohibited by DoJ policy) were excuses that Gonzales dreamed up to justify the real reason Charlton had to go.
Addendum 3:25 PM
The Wall Street Journal weighs in with a front page story on the details of the questionable and almst certainly corrupt land swap.
So far we have:
  • Carol Lam - removed as U.S. Attorney in San Diego because of her investigations into corrupt Republican Congress persons Duke Cunningham and John Doolittle, and
  • Debra Yang - U.S. Attorney of Los Angeles bought off with a lucrative job (at the law firm which represents Rep. Jerry Lewis no less) and a $1.5 million bribe signing bonus because she was investigating - you guessed it - Rep. Jerry Lewis. Now we have
  • Paul Charlton - U.S. Attorney of Arizona removed as he was investigating Rep. Rick Renzi, Republican of Arizona.

Did Republicans pay Debra Yang $1.5 million to stop the investigation of Rep. Jerry Lewis?

James Risser is asking this question over at dKos now. Regular readers here will remember that I was asking this question previously here and here last month. Mr. Risser has tracked the story of Debra Yang back a way. Here is part fo what he dug up regarding Ms. Yang:
"Here is her tangled story, an iceberg-tip view of the Rep. Jerry Lewis scandals which she was investigating as a US Attorney, and the treacherous firm of Bush Crime Family consigliere in Los Angeles who serve as Defense Council for Rep. Lewis, the same firm where Yang currently receives her blood-money.

We will soon enough get to her official bio from the firm that paid her $1.5 million, Gibson Dunn in Los Angeles--the same firm that, coincidentally enough, was defending Rep. Jerry Lewis of California. Let me say that again so there is no confusion: She was in charge of the case against Rep. Jerry Lewis. He is being defended against these charges by Gibson Dunn in Los Angeles. Ms Yang received $1.5 million from the firm defending Rep. Lewis, Gibson Dunn, to leave the Justice Department where she was prosecuting Rep. Lewis. And, remarkably, this is the second time that Jerry Lewis has hired a former US Attorney to handle his defense. Thanks to the fine work of TPMuckracker from June 2006, we find that Lewis did the same thing with Robert Bonner, a member in good-standing of the Bush Crime Family since Daddy Bush made Bonner his Drug Czar in the 1990s through the present!
His lead lawyer is Robert Bonner, a man with a long, impressive CV -- featuring one clincher: Bonner used to run the U.S. Attorney's Office that's now investigating Lewis.

Who better to handle an investigation concerning the revolving door between Lewis' office and that of his lobbyist pal Bill Lowery than a man who's switched sides himself?

Bonner headed up the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California from 1984 through 1989 before he went on to serve as a judge in that district. That same office is conducting the investigation of Lewis.
Mr Bonner is a partner at Gibson Dunn in their Los Angeles office in the same practice group as Ms Yang where he has recently been called to do some work for the Bush Crime Family. Once you are in, you only get out at death. But, the money is good, if you can stand it: In 2006, Rep. Lewis rang up a $971,000 legal bill; that sort of money adds up after a few years.
From 2003 through December 2005, Mr. Bonner served as the first Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency of the Department of Homeland Security responsible for managing, controlling and securing the United States' borders, while facilitating global trade and travel.

Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Mr. Bonner created the unprecedented Container Security Initiative (CSI) and the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) – both continue to revolutionize the security and more efficient movement of trade around the world. At the same time Mr. Bonner focused on securing international supply chains from the terrorist threat, he also pursued and implemented a national border control strategy to secure America’s borders. This strategy consists of a centralized command structure, rapid response capability, and a defense-in-depth, while relying upon highly-trained personnel, strengthened infrastructure and improved technology.
This is how the San Bernardino County Sun announced it on June 13, 2006:
Robert Bonner, former head of the U.S. Attorney's Office Central District of California, leads a group of attorneys that include former Santa Monica congressman Mel Levine, former federal Solicitor General Ted Olson and Joe Warin of the Los Angeles- based firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.

Lewis' new legal team was confirmed Thursday by another new Lewis hire, spokeswoman Barbara Comstock, a former Department of Justice spokeswoman. Comstock also worked for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff.

Lewis and his ties to lobbyist and former San Diego congressman Bill Lowery are part of a federal criminal investigation that has reached San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Numerous local government agencies have been subpoenaed for records regarding Lewis and lobbying firm Copeland Lowery Jacquez Denton & White.

Lewis, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees $900 billion in federal outlays, has not been charged with any crimes or wrongdoing.

Bonner's past clients include former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, who served three years in federal prison for tax evasion.
This is not a nice story, but the facts support it.

What the White House and the Department of Justice have been doing as part of the politicization of the U.S. Attorneys is to pressure them to bring the kinds of bogus cases against Democrats that Biscupic did to Georgia Thompson of Wisconsin or to buy out those U.S. Attorneys who were getting too close to corrupt politicians. Then at least some of the ones who would not cooperate or allow themselves to be bought off were fired in the Pearl Harbor Day Massacre.

The source of this conspiracy is in the White House, which is why Bush is yelling "Executive Privilege" and trying to stretch it to cover documents that were intentionally not using the official system of emails to avoid legal retention requirements.

Expect the Bush White House to fight any efforts to get White House personnel to testify, or to get them to turn over significant documents.

Debra Yang was investigating Rep. Lewis, left to work for his law firm.

I got my answer from Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo. Prior to being hired away by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, the law firm defending Rep. Jerry Lewis, Debra Yang's Los Angeles US attorney office was the one supervising the corruption investigation into Rep. Lewis.

Here is from an earlier report from TPM Muckraker:
The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles has issued subpoenas in an investigation into the relationship between Lewis (R-Redlands) and a Washington lobbyist linked to disgraced former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Rancho Santa Fe), three people familiar with the investigation said....

The government is looking into the connection between Lewis and his longtime friend Bill Lowery, the sources said. Lowery, a lobbyist, is a former congressman from San Diego.

As chairman of the Appropriations panel, Lewis has earmarked hundreds of millions of dollars in federal contracts for many of Lowery's clients, one of the sources said....

The probe focuses on what one source said was an unusually close relationship between Lewis and Lowery, who served on the House Appropriations Committee together from 1985 to 1993.

Shortly after leaving Congress, Lowery founded Copeland Lowery Jacquez Denton & White, a Washington lobbying firm whose clients include Brent R. Wilkes, a defense contractor who is the focus of a separate probe in San Diego.
Ms. Yang resigned her position as US attorney effective November 10, 2006. This was three weeks prior to the "Pearl Harbor Day Massacre" of US attorneys.

Let's put this together with the strange gap in the documents the DoJ has handed to the Congress. Again, Talking Points Memo has the story.
I think a commenter in our document dump research thread may have been the first to notice that the emails released by the Justice Department seem to have a gap between November 15th and December 4th of last year. [Snip]

The firing calls went out on December 7th. But the original plan was to start placing the calls on November 15th. So those eighteen days are pretty key ones.
More and more I strongly suspect that the entire US attorney Purge has been primarily cover for derailing the investigations into Republican corruption in Southern California.

We need to see the missing documents, and we need to get the staff at the DoJ and the White House to testify - under oath - at the Senate Hearings.

This is beginning to take on the trappings that surrounded the Watergate Hearings and the Nixon efforts to derail them.

Who is running the investigation of Rep. Jerry Lewis?

Sunday I posted a story in which I regretted an earlier story (March 14th) stating that the investigation into the allegedly corrupt activities of California Rep. Jerry Lewis was being run from the US attorney's office run by Debra Yang in Los Angeles rather than the office of Carol Lam in San Diego. In checking my information, I learned that both stories are currently active in the blogosphere, but neither is well-sourced.

I checked the Press Releases from both the San Diego and the Los Angeles offices, and found no answer.

So I emailed Thom Mrozek, Public Affairs Officer United States Attorney's Office - Los Angeles and asked if the Los Angeles US attorney was supervising the investigation into Rep. Jerry Lewis. Mr. Mrozek replied "We have not made any comment on media reports concerning this matter." written in blue as I demonstrate.

This looks like an interesting story. But I live in Texas and know no one in California who I can call to verify who is running the investigation of Rep. Lewis. If anyone can verify that Los Angeles US attorney Debra Yang was supervising the investigation before she went to work for the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher who represents Rep. Jerry Lewis in that investigation, that is a big story. Since I live in Texas, I have no connections who can provide further information on this story.

If anyone can confirm that the investigation was out of the Los Angeles US attorney's office, please let me know. My email is jayray21@hotmail.com, my name is Richard and my phone is (817) 413-7236. I need at least one strong confirmation and I want two. I will respect and protect your anonymity if necessary but I need to know how you know.

Please contact me. Thanks.

Who is Rep. Jerry Lewis?

This article from Congresspedia is an excellent summary of the situation that Rep. Jerry Lewis is in right now.

I might add that I wish I had checked this out before writing earlier that the corruption investigation into Rep. Lewis was being handled by Debra Yang out of Los Angeless. I appear to be wrong about that. He is clearly in the USA district of Carol Lam. My source was Laura Rozen of War and Piece, someone I usually find reliable, and I am not a Californian. San Diego? Los Angeles? Just two big cities located somewhere, and where in heck was Riverside County? I thought it was just east of Los Angeles. I swear I did. and what's San Diego famous for? Nothing, right? It's just "Hey, we're almost to Mexico!" That's like people who think that Texarkana, Texas is cloer to El Paso, Texas than it is to Chicago, Ill. It's not.

The connection appears to be that Debra Yang did go to the law firm defending Jerry Lewis, but based on the map it does not seem likely that Ms. Yang was heading the investigation into Jerry Lewis. Carol Lam would have been doing that.

Mea Culpa. The confusion appears to have been mine.

This is not any better for Jerry Lewis, though. He still seems to be as crooked as ex-Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, just not investigated as soon.

Investigation of Rep. Jerry Lewis (CA - R)

Speaking of Rep. Jerry Lewis, the investigation took an interesting twist last November. The investigation was being run by Los Angeles US attorney Debra Wong Yang. Apparently she felt the heat. Laura Rozen at War and Piece has the story.
Perhaps the most interesting recently departed US attorney to hear from would be one who left ostensibly voluntarily. Former Los Angeles US attorney Debra Wong Yang, who had been heading up the investigation into former Appropriations committee chairman Jerry Lewis. And where did Yang go on January 1st? To the law firm representing Lewis. The fact that Yang resigned her office November 10 -- just after the elections - is interesting. It's no secret that the decision to retire and a decision informed by knowledge one is going to be dismissed are sometimes the same thing. Is Yang the exception that proves the rule, or no exception at all? Among the powerful partners at Gibson Dunn, the firm that offered Yang a golden parachute, you will remember, is Theodore Olsen, the Bush White House former solicitor general.
Rozens source is a local Los Angeles paper, the Metropolitan News-Enterprise.

[H/T to Calitics.]

[03 18 2007] Mea Culpa
Apparently Debra Yang, the US attorney for Los Angeles was NOT investigating Rep. Jerry Lewis. Based on the map, Rep. Lewis represents the 41st District of California, which covers the area East of San Diego. Based on the map, Carol Lam, the US attorney for San Diego would have investigated that.

I didn't properly fact-check that. My apologies.
