Al Franken presents his first Senatorial funny

Al Franken as the most junior Senator in the Senate got to ask Sonia Sotomayor the last question of the questioning phase of the hearings. The question was fun for everyone.

Since the conclusion of he hearings is going to be the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, the only question that has been unanswered in the otherwise boring proceedings was how the Republicans would express their bile and then somehow orchestrate a switch to vote for Sotomayor's confirmation, the moment of lightness was exactly what the proceedings have needed.

Trust Al Franken to know that and provide what was needed.

Conservative insanity over Mrs. Sotomayor

feministing.com has a screen shot of the cover of National Review. The commentary gets it exactly right.

Those NR people are out of their minds. Since as far as I know National Review has NEVER made a profit, you have to wonder what kind of wealthy funder(s) is hiring those people writing there and what their goal is. Deep pockets and a strong desire to destroy America as a middle class nation, but you have to wonder why?

My bet is that whoever it is lives on inherited wealth, and fears ever having to go to work to replace it. Thus they see all taxes, especially the inheritance tax, as a threat to themselves, their family, and their plutocratic class. That is (again, my hypothesis) true for most of the funders of the American Enterprise Institute, and the Heritage Foundation.

There are two threads, though. The second one is religious. That's why Rev. Moon subsidizes the Washington Times and someone subsidizes the Discovery Institute.

As for FOX News and the Weekly standard owned by Rupert Murdoch, I am not sure what his motivation and psychological drivers are. He did inherit his original stake but he built it to the world-wide empire it is on his own. Great wealth itself may be corrupting, not just inherited great wealth. Is it paranoia? Dunno.
